Core WIC MaterialsCore WIC Pre-Training NotebookTrainees are encouraged to review the following materials and do the activities within each section to help prepare for training.
Core WIC Training NotebookThe focus of Core WIC training is to help staff learn essential WIC functions and procedures. Although training is not being offered until 2010, we are making the training notebook available for in-clinic learning. The notebook has been divided into sections to help staff easily find specific content. The number assigned to each section relates to the sequence of the training provided at the state office. We recommend following the suggested sequence, when possible, to support optimal training. For example, it is better to review the section on “WIC Foods” before completing the section on “Issuing WIC Checks.” The learning objectives and table of contents are provided at the beginning of each section.Note: Activities and hands-on computer tasks used during the classroom training have not been removed from these materials; staff may not be able to perform these activities. This notebook was designed for Washington WIC staff and is not intended for the general public. It contains terms, abbreviations and acronyms that may not be familiar to those outside of WIC and the field of nutrition and healthcare.

Training ModulesWIC Learning Online ModulesWIC Learning Online offers a series of 18 modules designed to train all levels of staff working in the WIC program. Staff are introduced to a variety of topics that will impact their work as certifiers and/or clerks. The modules are approved for Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits by the American Dietetic Association.The online modules include these topic areas:
Washington State WIC Paraprofessional Nutrition ModuleWe are releasing this draft Basic Nutrition Chapter as the first chapter within the Paraprofessional Nutrition Module. This chapter was developed to support competent professional authorities (CPAs) in learning the key components of basic nutrition. Increasing CPA’s nutrition knowledge is essential to assuring a Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment and providing a strong foundation for offering accurate nutrition education to clients.Note: This chapter is one of six; the other five chapters of the Paraprofessional Nutrition Module are still under development. Draft Basic Nutrition Chapter (586.24 KB)This is the first chapter of Washington’s Paraprofessional Nutrition Module for competent professional authorities (CPAs). This chapter offers core information about nutrition and growth for the human body. There is brief review of carbohydrates, protein and fats, vitamins and minerals, and the target nutrients found in WIC foods. The module includes several learning activities and a progress check at the end of the chapter. A final test and answer sheet (122.89 KB) are provided below (80 pages, including learning activities and progress check).Draft Western Region Nutrition Module Development ProjectThe Arizona WIC Program is working with the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) to develop modules that are non-state specific that could be used by any state in the western region. Additional Training ResourcesInfant and Child NutritionInfant Nutrition and Feeding: A Guide for Use in the WIC and Commodity Supplemental Food Programs (CSFP)This is a reference handbook for WIC staff which provides an overview of topics related to infant nutrition and feeding. Topics include the nutritional needs of infants, feeding skill development, breastfeeding, formula feeding, introduction of complementary foods, infant feeding practices, and more.Child of Mine: Feeding Your Child with Love and Good SenseEllyn Satter, MS, RD, CICSW, BCD, Boulder; Bull Publishing Co., 2000A warm, supportive, and entertaining book for parents about basic nutrition for infants and young children, and a solid nutrition reference for professionals. Food for TotsDr. Janice Woolley & Jennifer Pugmire, Mercer Island, Division of Mammoth MediaThis book offers up-to-date and complete guidance for feeding preschoolers. It provides recipes that are easy, safe, nutritious and fun. It also suggests creative ways to include little children in cooking. Excerpts from the Food for Tots book were condensed to create the Food for Tots booklet. All Washington State WIC clinics can order this booklet free of charge from the Department of Printing General Store. Washington WIC Client Educational MaterialsClient nutrition and breastfeeding educational materials offer basic information on a variety of topics. Reviewing these materials can be a nice introduction for new staff learning about nutrition and feeding practices. It provides guidelines for children’s health and offers many different resources to use in improving and maintaining the health of kids.American Dietetic AssociationThe American Dietetic Association provides fact sheets on a wide range of topics. These brief fact sheets provide nutrition facts along with healthy eating tips and recipes.
