Best Practices - Tools and Resources

Asthma home visits:

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends asthma home visits for children with asthma. Home visits are a cost-effective way to improve asthma control when they:

  • Identify asthma triggers in the home.
  • Address more than one asthma trigger.
  • Use multiple strategies to reduce triggers.
  • Provide education on reducing triggers and controlling asthma.

The Asthma Program works to make home visits available statewide by providing asthma educator training and grants. Home visits for people with asthma are available in :

Weatherization Plus Health has tools for programs to address asthma triggers ( moisture/mold, pests, allergens), lead hazards, and carbon monoxide.

Other best practices:

Communities and coalitions have the power to address asthma by building community resources and promoting asthma-friendly policies, especially in low-income areas and communities of color. We know that American Indians, Alaska Natives, and African Americans are more likely than other racial groups to have asthma. They are also less likely to have asthma under control.
