In the Workplace

Asthma is the most common work-related lung disease. It is a reportable condition in Washington State.

Work-related asthma is a large but preventable health problem. It reduces quality of life and ability to work. About 15 percent of adult asthma can be linked to workplace exposures.

The types of work-related asthma are:

  1. Occupational Asthma: is caused by exposure to substances in the workplace which lead to breathing difficulties over time.
  2. Reactive Airways Dysfunction Syndrome (RADS): asthma symptoms occur right after exposure to high levels of an irritant in the workplace.
  3. Work-Aggravated Asthma: pre-existing asthma that is made worse by substances in the workplace.

To report occupational asthma, visit Washington State Department of Labor & Industries.
