Emergency Cardiac & Stroke Response

Emergency responders—9-1-1 dispatch, emergency medical services, and hospital emergency departments—play a critical role in preventing death and disability from stroke, heart attack, and other cardiac emergencies. To get people who are having a heart attack or stroke to the right place in time to get optimal care, we are creating a coordinated Emergency Cardiac and Stroke System.

System changes underway to improve emergency heart and stroke care

We are working with the Office of Community Health Systems  and the Emergency Cardiac and Stroke Technical Advisory Committee to improve emergency care. The work is based on recommendations in the Emergency Cardiac and Stroke Care in Washington 2008 report

The committee has developed:

  • Standards for training and treatment protocols.
  • State triage and destination plans for cardiac and stroke emergencies.
  • A hospital categorization program for cardiac and stroke care.
  • Recommendations for evaluating the effectiveness of the system.

The protocols, triage tools, and hospital categorization program details are on the Emergency Cardiac and Stroke System web page.
