Drug and Alcohol Screening

Department of Health Maternal Substance Abuse Screening Quality Improvement Activities

Substance abuse during pregnancy is an issue critical to the health of mothers and babies from all socioeconomic groups. Treatment for substance abuse during pregnancy can be more effective than at other times in a woman’s life.  Providers play an important role in influencing the health behaviors of pregnant women in their care.  The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends that all pregnant women be questioned thoroughly about substance abuse.

State Department of Health Activities:

  • Work with key professional organizations to develop and maintain this standard of care.

  • Identify and work with physicians who are interested in this area and will work to change peer practice.

  • Provide technical assistance and consultation to providers and other health care organizations related to conference planning and resource materials.

  • Exhibit at medical professional meetings and conferences.

  • Hospital Guidelines for Testing Drug Exposed Newborns.  (This document was designed for physicians and other healthcare professionals and is not intended for the general public. It contains terms, abbreviations and acronyms that may not be familiar to those outside the field of healthcare.)  The purpose of this document is to provide consistent guidance related to maternal and newborn screening and testing and reporting drug-exposed newborns to Department of Social and Health Services.  The Guidelines have been developed in collaboration with Department of Social and Health Services (Children's Administration and Health and Recovery Services Administration), Regional Perinatal Networks, State Perinatal Advisory Committee, and other experts in the field. Although there are no clear laws to direct practice, these guidelines and tools may be helpful to hospitals and providers who are struggling with this complex issue.
  • Department of Social and Health Services Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Directory of Certified Chemical Dependency Services in Washington State.  This directory lists services by county and by type, such as residential services for women and children and chemical use in pregnant women.

  •  Substance Abuse During Pregnancy: Guidelines for Screening The best practice guide includes screening guidelines, tools and tips, additional information on skill building techniques, testing and consent issues, laboratory testing, basic prenatal management, referral information, and other resources.

  • “Pregnant Women Chemical Dependency/Abuse Resource Guide This resource assists health professionals who identify pregnant women in need of chemical dependency treatment.
