Family Violence

Family violence is used as an umbrella term to represent domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and intimate partner violence.  The health, health system and economic impact can include:

  • Physical injuries such as broken bones, bruises, chronic pain, stress headaches.
  • Mental health issues such as depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety.
  • Social health issues such as eating disorders, low self esteem, isolation from friends, family, and resources.
  • Increased visits to the emergency room.
  • Missed work.
  • Increased risk of child abuse or maltreatment.

The Department of Health responds to this issue in the following ways:

Community Partnership Against Sexual and Domestic Violence

The Community Partnership is a group of committed health care, public health, and advocacy oriented individuals and organizations dedicated to cultivating both the health care and victim advocacy response to better meet the needs of victims of domestic and sexual violence.  This group has been instrumental in the development of curricula, web site information, and presentations to both health care providers and victim advocacy groups.  New members are welcome.  Contact Debbie Ruggles at 360-236-2859 or debbie.ruggles@doh.wa.gov

The Department of Health Family Violence Prevention Work Group

The purpose of the Family Violence Prevention Work Group is to improve cross-division work and collaboration related to Family Violence Prevention (violence against women, child abuse and maltreatment, elder abuse and maltreatment, and sexual assault).  Through cross-agency representation, activities and coordination of programs takes place through meetings, events, and partnerships. Contact Debbie Ruggles at 360-236-2859 or debbie.ruggles@doh.wa.gov

Domestic Violence and Pregnancy: Guidelines for Screening and Referral (August 2008) (PDF-409.96KB)

The best practice guide includes information about the benefits of universal screening for domestic violence during pregnancy, sample questions and statements to assist in starting the conversation in a safe and comfortable way, what to do when violence is disclosed, and information on safety planning.

The Perinatal Domestic Violence Identification Services:  A Guide to Culturally Relevant Care in Health Clinics (April 2004) (PDF-3384.27KB)

This guide is the product of a collaborative grant between Department of Health and the International Community Health Services Clinic to provide community health clinics with methods for implementation of a culturally relevant domestic violence identification system in a prenatal clinic setting.  The Perinatal Domestic Violence Identification Services Guide offers an assessment tool (PDF-14.34KB), suggested activities, tools and protocols.
