The Birth Defects Surveillance Enhancement Plan was developed to create a consistent and thorough approach to improving birth defect surveillance in Washington State. Nine structural birth defects (i.e., anencephaly, spina bifida, cleft lip with/without cleft palate, cleft palate, 2° and 3° hypospodius, limb reduction defects, gastroschisis, omphalocele, and Down Syndrome) and three complex disorders (i.e., autism, cerebral palsy, and fetal alcohol syndrome) are part of the notifiable conditions regulation.
