MIH Provider Education

MIH provides best practice materials for health care professionals at Publications for Health Care Professionals.

Breastfeeding: MIH promotes breastfeeding through work with First Steps agencies (Maternity Support Services and Maternity Case Management), WIC, Within Reach (formerly Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies), and the Breastfeeding Infant Friendly Workplace Promotion.

Regional Perinatal Programs: MIH manages contracts with four regional perinatal centers in Washington State to coordinate and implement state and regional quality improvements projects to decrease poor pregnancy outcomes for which Medicaid clients are at disproportionately increased risk.

Perinatal Partnership Against Domestic Violence (PPADV): The PPADV curriculum is designed for health care professionals and advocates who provide training for perinatal health care providers. The goal is to increase provider awareness of domestic violence and to provide tools for health care professionals to provide culturally competent domestic violence identification and intervention in pregnant and postpartum women. For more information, call Washington State Department of Health: 360-236-3501 or Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence: 206-389-2515, ext. 104, or the Washington State Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-562-6025.

HIV: MIH works with the Department of Health HIV program to reduce perinatal HIV transmission through reduction of HIV infection in women.

Maternal Substance Abuse Screening Provider Initiative: MIH works to enhance prenatal provider substance abuse screening practices so that more women with abuse patterns are identified and engaged in treatment.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS): MIH works collaboratively with the Washington State SIDS Foundation, Children & Family Health and Medical Assistance Administration on Back to Sleep education campaigns with high risk populations in Washington State.  For more information on SIDS: http://www.sids.org/ or http://thesidsfoundation.org/default.aspx; phone 1-800-533-0376

Tobacco:  Women who smoke during pregnancy have a higher risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, and low birth weight babies. SIDS rates are over 6 times higher for infants who mothers smoke during pregnancy. Therefore a strategy to reduce tobacco use during pregnancy and decrease second hand smoke exposure was identified for use with the First Steps (MSS) population. This program provides educational materials and methods to assist providers in helping women stop using tobacco products during and after pregnancy. For more information, click Tobacco (above).

In addition, effective January 1, 2002, Medical Assistance Administration (MAA) in Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) added Medicaid coverage of a smoking cessation benefit for pregnant and postpartum women (up to 2 months postpartum), as described on the MAA Smoking Cessation Counseling Benefit reference card.  For additional services on tobacco programs, see www.doh.wa.gov/tobacco/ or call the Quit Line at 1-877-270-7867.

Maternal and Infant Health and Tobacco Prevention and Control Program in collaboration with DSHS, the statewide Perinatal Advisory Committee and other heath care professionals have developed a best practice booklet for prenatal care providers. Smoking Cessation During Pregnancy: Guidelines for Intervention includes information on using motivational interviewing techniques, tips for dealing with relapse, developing quit plans, expanded pharmacotherapy information and additional resources.

Maternity Support Services (MSS): Portion of First Steps program overseen by DOH designed as preventative services to help women have a healthy pregnancy outcome. Services are provided by a multi-disciplinary team and include assessment, education, intervention and counseling and referral. MIH provides technical assistance, training and monitors MSS providers statewide. First Steps Program

WIC (Women Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program): WIC serves pregnant women and children up to age five. WIC is co-located with many First Steps agencies. For more information, call 1-800-841-1410.
