About Us

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) is a nutrition education program for people who receive, or are eligible to receive, food stamp benefits.

Contracting agencies (PDF, 167KB)  must show that at least half of the people receiving nutrition education have a household income at or below 185% of the federal poverty level.

The Program helps people improve their nutritional health. Each agency must have a project that supports people to eat more fruit and vegetables. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans are used as the standard.

We work in partnership with other nutrition programs, including:

  • Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infant's and Children, (popularly known as WIC)
  • United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Distribution
  • Child Nutrition Programs
  • Groups working with income eligible populations
Consultation and training is provided by program staff  to agencies who are considering joining SNAP-Ed. They include:
  • application preparation
  • fiscal and evaluation trainings
  • program planning
  • project support

Funding for SNAP-Ed comes from the USDA and operates through a joint agreement between Washington State Department of Social and Health Services and Washington State Department of Health.
