bullet On a team of 15 players, at least one athlete is likely to have asthma:
The Minnesota Department of Health today unveiled an innovative tool designed to help coaches understand asthma so they can help their players with asthma properly manage their condition while succeeding in sports. Asthma is chronic respiratory condition causing inflammation, excessive mucus production, and contraction of the muscles surrounding the airways. For many people with asthma, exposure to specific allergens or irritants or even aerobic activity can cause the muscles around the irritated airways to contract and begin producing symptoms. When these muscles contract, they also narrow the airway passages, making breathing more difficult, and the athlete starts to experience an asthma "attack."  The Coach's Asthma Clipboard Program, "Winning With Asthma," consists of a free 30-minute online educational program created for coaches, referees and physical education teachers. Upon completing the program, the coach will receive a special clipboard detailing steps to take during an asthma attack, a certificate of completion, and a booklet that expands on asthma information written with coaches in mind.  Read the entire news release at:  http://www.health.state.mn.us/news/pressrel/asthma011106.html
