A Little Dark Chocolate Does A Heart Good
TUESDAY, Dec. 20 (HealthDay News) -- Just in time for the
candy-clogged holidays, a new Swiss study finds a little
dark chocolate each day could slow hardening of the arteries
in smokers.

TV Watching and Childhood Obesity Lecture
The State University of New York at Albany School
of Public Health will host TV Watching and Childhood
Obesity, a lecture by Steven Gortmaker, PhD of the Harvard
School of Public Health on January 19, 2006. The lecture can

2006 the American Lung Association will release its annual
State of Tobacco Control report. The
American Lung Association State of Tobacco Control: 2005
report grades tobacco control policies in four key areas in
all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
The American Lung Association also grades the United States'
performance in four key areas of national tobacco control

Initiative to Promote Healthy Eating Among Children

March 7, 2006 The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (

Healthy Eating Research (http://www.healthyeatingresearch.org/
), a five-year, $16 million program to
evaluate changes in policies and environments that can
promote healthy eating among children.

Starbucks Foundation: Literacy programs that address 21st
Century learning Deadlines: March 1 and September 1, 2006
The Starbucks Foundation funds programs for youth ages 6-18
that integrate literacy with personal and civic action in
the communities where they live. The Starbucks Foundation
invites letters of inquiry from qualifying 501(c) 3
organizations that work with underserved youth in the fields
of literacy (reading, writing, and creative/media arts) and
environmental literacy. Grants range from $5,000-$20,000.

2006 Healthy Youth Survey
(HYS) and upcoming recruitment training
The HYS 2006 Recruitment Training will be held on January
25, 2006 in the afternoon at each of the nine Educational
Service Districts. Local health partners play a key role in
promoting school recruitment and participation, and using
the HYS county and school data for local program planning
efforts. School participation is critical to the survey, and
as someone interested in supporting the survey, you can help
with school recruitment efforts. Thank you for your efforts.

improve the quality of care for patients with chronic
conditions, in particular diabetes and those at risk for
cardiovascular disease. Collaborative 5, which begins in
February 2006, will offer separate tracks for teams that

cardiovascular disease or diabetes management. |
