bullet YMCA/Steps/National Association of Councils  on Developmental Disabilities Collaboration Update
The final report of the 2005 YMCA/Steps/NACDD Workshop is now posted on the NACDD web site. The report details events of the 2005 meeting and efforts of over 15 national organizations in planning the workshop. Since the partnership began in 2004, 16 first-year and 24 second-year YMCA / Steps Community Collaboration applications have been developed and received funds for local awards to improve community health.  In addition, the Steps program in Mesa County (Grand Junction, CO) is working toward its vision of building a local YMCA. The total amount awarded to 40 Y/Steps communities is now $280,000. These communities will provide a variety of prevention and health promotion services based on the needs identified in each Steps Community Action plan.  One of the greatest successes of the collaborative is the investment of in-kind resources from local programs. The YMCA / Steps communities collectively identified $337,492 (120% of direct funding) in-kind and matching resources for program services and outreach. This translates into direct and in-kind funding of $617,492 to support prevention and health promotion activities in these communities that will help meet the objectives they established. This collaborative effort exemplifies the missions of NACDD, the Y-USA and the Steps programs.

Active Living Research is a $12.5 million national program to stimulate and support research that will identify environmental factors and policies that influence physical activity. Findings are expected to inform environmental and policy changes that will promote active living among Americans, both young and old.  This research will help increase our understanding of the relationship of environmental characteristics to physical activity for three priority topics: young people’s use of parks, physical activity in and around buildings, and physical activity in rural areas. Evaluations of community interventions that are part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Active Living by Design program also will be supported. The research funded under this call for proposals will inform the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s efforts to help halt the increasing prevalence of childhood obesity by 2015.  For more information, please visit the Active Living Research Web site.
