Infant Nutrition and Feeding: A Guide for Use in the WIC and Commodity Supplemental Food Programs (CSFP)

This is a reference handbook for WIC staff which provides an overview of topics related to infant nutrition and feeding. Topics include the nutritional needs of infants, feeding skill development, breastfeeding, formula feeding, introduction of complementary foods, infant feeding practices, and more.

A warm, supportive, and entertaining book for parents about basic nutrition for infants and young children, and a solid nutrition reference for professionals. Food for Tots

Dr. Janice Woolley & Jennifer Pugmire, Mercer Island, Division of Mammoth Media
This book offers up-to-date and complete guidance for feeding preschoolers. It provides recipes that are easy, safe, nutritious and fun. It also suggests creative ways to include little children in cooking. Excerpts from the Food for Tots book were condensed to create the Food for Tots booklet. All Washington State WIC clinics can order this booklet free of charge from the Department of Printing General Store.

Washington WIC Client Educational Materials

Client nutrition and breastfeeding educational materials offer basic information on a variety of topics. Reviewing these materials can be a nice introduction for new staff learning about nutrition and feeding practices. Bright Futures

Bright Futures was developed by multidisciplinary child health experts—providers, researchers, parents, and child advocates. It provides guidelines for children’s health and offers many different resources to use in improving and maintaining the health of kids.

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

The Academy provides fact sheets on a wide range of topics. These brief fact sheets provide nutrition facts along with healthy eating tips and recipes.

USDA WIC Learning Online

WIC Learning Online offers a series of 18 modules designed to train all levels of staff working in the WIC program. Staff are introduced to a variety of topics that will impact their work as certifiers and/or clerks. The modules are approved for Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits by the American Dietetic Association.

The online modules include these topic areas:

  • Communication (customer service, low literacy, culture)
  • Counseling Skills (facilitated discussion, motivational interviewing)
  • Reaching Participants through WIC (outreach, referrals, nutrition education)
  • Health and Nutrition (feeding infants and children safely, breastfeeding, herbs and supplements)
  • Feeding Infants ( formula, 0-6 mo. feeding, 6-12 mo. feeding)
  • Value Enhanced Nutrition Education (critical thinking, health outcome-based assessment)
