How can I get help to quit smoking?


Why quit?

  • Prevent cancer, heart and lung disease.
  • Prevent oral health problems.
  • Prevent early menopause; less likely to have menopausal symptoms.
  • Healthier smile.
  • Better health in general.
  • Feel control of your life.
  • Set a good example for your children.
  • Protect your family from breathing other people’s smoke.
  • Less likely to have irregular or painful menstrual periods and premenstrual symptoms.

Tips to help you quit

  • Set a quit date.
  • Quit with a buddy.
  • Contact the free Tobacco quit line (see below).
  • Talk to your health care provider about quitting.
  • If you smoke a pack or more each day, consider medication to help.
  • Don’t smoke any number or kind of cigarette.
  • Write down why you want to quit.
  • It’s hard to quit but many have - take it one day at a time.
  • Take up healthy hobbies like knitting, gardening, handwork.
  • Get regular exercise.
