Office of Drinking Water Rules View and download our rule publications Final Rules - New RulesFederal Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts RuleThe federal Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts Rule (Stage 2) was adopted on October 13, 2009 and will be effective on January 4, 2010. The rule requires water systems to reduce peak and average levels of disinfection byproducts in drinking water supplies. The public health objective of this rule is to prevent potential cancer, reproductive and developmental health effects. EPA will continue enforcing the Stage 2 requirements until our rule becomes effective on January 4, 2010. We will send letters to the affected water systems at the end of this year to explain the transition and the next deadlines. We will also have an article in the December “Water Tap” and update our Web page. For more information:

Over the last 15 years, we learned a lot from our experience in regulating these very small water systems. We are currently evaluating the feedback and making changes to the draft rule language. Federal Groundwater RuleEPA adopted the Groundwater Rule on November 8, 2006. The rule increases public health protection by reducing the risk of viruses and bacteria in drinking water wells. This rule revision will apply to all Group A community and non-community water systems that serve groundwater.
