Waterworks Operator Certification

Ensuring public water systems are operated by certified operators

Disclaimer

Water systems classified as Group A Community, Nontransient noncommunity (NTNC), Transient noncommunity (TNC) with surface water or groundwater under the influence of surface water (GWI) as their source, and TNCs classified as significant noncompliers (SNCs) are required under WAC 246-292-020 to employ certified operators to carry out various operational functions.

To become certified, operators must meet minimum education and experience requirements and pass an examination. In addition, certified operators must meet a professional growth requirement every three years to maintain their certification status.

To assist public water systems in meeting the requirement of employing certified operators the Department of Health maintains a  list of certified contract operators (118 KB PDF).
