Mercury

School Spills and Exposures Across the United States

Over the last few years, mercury spills have been reported in schools in Arizona, Kentucky, Michigan, Massachusetts, Mississippi, and Nevada.  While knowledge of the dangers of mercury exposure is becoming more widespread and efforts to reduce and eliminate mercury in schools have increased, the number of reported spills has also steadily gone up each year.  The EPA reports in 2004 alone there were 12 cases of mercury spills in U.S. schools.

Mercury incidents in schools have been reported as recently as March 2005, at a high school in Madison, Kentucky, when a student brought a bottle of elemental mercury to school.  Three classrooms were contaminated and the school was closed for ten days.
