from the harmful effects of  radiation.

Consultation and general technical assistance is available for

Monitors and measures levels of radiation in the air, water, soils, foods and the environment.

Licenses and inspects radioactive materials used in industry, research and in the healing arts.

Guide the department's response to a major accident involving radiation by coordinating all actions taken to protect the public from radiation exposure.

Enforces compliance with the federal and state Clean Air Acts for radionuclides at nuclear facilities statewide.

Licenses and regulates the commercial low-level radioactive waste disposal site, uranium millsite, and radioactive waste processor.

Regulates machine generated sources of radiation.

The Department of Health and the Use of Full Body X-Ray Screening at Airports

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has introduced the use of full body X-ray scans at airports. As the TSA is a federal agency, the Washington State Department of Health has no regulatory authority over the federal government's use of X-ray producing devices in our state.

A person on a cross-country flight receives about 2 millirem of cosmic radiation.  In terms of the radiation exposure, the maximum exposure from a security scan using the full body scans is 0.025 millirem per scan. This very low exposure level is

  • equal to five minutes of radiation exposure one receives during a cross country flight (exposure is based on altitude) or

  • the exposure one receives during a Seattle to Portland flight.

For more information go to the FDA Products for Security Screening of People.

Radiation Information

We have known about radiation since the discovery of X-rays and radioactivity in the 1890's. Both its harmful effects and its beneficial health uses became better known as technology advanced and radioactive materials and machine generated radiation came into wider use.

Radiation is both natural and human-made. Our surroundings, behaviors, medical needs and even our diets expose us to radiation. Controlling excessive exposure to radiation is necessary to adequately protect workers, the general public and the environment.
