National Outbreak of Salmonella Tennessee (posted 2/15/07)Public health officials in multiple states are investigating a large outbreak of Salmonella Tennessee infections. As of February 15, 2007, 290 persons with illness have been reported to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 39 states. In Washington state, four matching S. Tennessee isolates were identified during October-November, 2006. These are listed presumptively as Washington cases. A case control study implicating peanut butter was based only on cases where a diarrheal illness with discrete onset date was reported. None of the Washington cases have met that case definition, nor have any of the Washington cases been confirmed to have a link with the implicated peanut butter. All salmonella isolates submitted to the Public Health Laboratory during the relevant time period have been screened for association with this outbreak. The counties where the matching isolates originated have been contacted. Persons presenting or calling with symptoms of salmonella infection who offer peanut butter samples for testing should be referred to their health care provider for stool testing, and asked to retain the peanut butter jar for possible testing in the event they are confirmed infected with S. Tennessee. Brands other than Peter Pan or Great Value have not been implicated in this outbreak and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), should not be cause for concern by consumers. Consumers without symptoms of illness who have purchased Peter Pan peanut butter should be advised to discard any remaining product (FDA advisory) or return it to the store for refund (Con Agra advisory).
