written exam for Certified Counselor and Certified Adviser?
We will send the applicant an approval
before they can take the exam. The applicant
must submit the application, pay the
application fee, meet the education or
experience requirements, receive a notice of
eligibility to sit for the exam from the
department, pay the exam fee, and register
to take the exam.
When and where will
the written exams be administered?
Exam administrations will begin in October.
Applicants will receive instructions to
register online for the exam when they
receive the "Notice of Eligibility to Sit
for the Exam" email. The exam will be
administered individually at various
Washington State test center locations.
Applicants will choose the test center
location and select the available dates and
times for the exam administration.

How many questions
are on the exam?
The exam will have 50 to 75 multiple choice
questions.
How long does the
exam take?
The exam takes approximately two hours.
Can I bring
reference materials and my own notes to the
exam?
No. All exam materials will be provided to
you at the exam site.

What topics are
covered on the exam?
The exam will cover risk assessment, ethics,
appropriate screening using the global
assessment of functioning scale, client
referral, and Washington State law.
How much does the
exam cost?
The cost of the exam is $85.

to prepare for the exam?
Although the exam content will come from a
variety of sources, the primary references
for the exam are:
Chapter on the Global Assessment of
Functioning in Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM),
Fourth Edition, American Psychiatric
Association.
Washington State Law (Available at
