Dispensers

Required Data Submission:

Law, RCW 70.225, authorizes the Washington State Department of Health to establish the Washington State Prescription Monitoring Program (WA PMP). Pharmacies and practitioners that dispense any Schedule II, III, IV, and V controlled substances, including samples, in Washington State or to an address in Washington must electronically report dispensing to the WA PMP.  Mandatory reporting began on October 7, 2011.

The WA PMP promotes public health and safety, and helps improve patient care. Practitioners and pharmacists will have secure 24/7 access for reviewing patient prescription histories. This helps determine appropriate medical treatment and referral needs.

Action Steps for Compliance:

  1. Log on to the program Web site (www.wapmp.org) and read the Dispenser’s Implementation Guide. Select the WA PMP Data Uploader link from the menu on the left.
  2. Create an account to submit data to the program.
  3. Begin working as soon as possible with your pharmacy software vendor to make any necessary updates and start data submission.

No Dispensing of Controlled Substances:

If your pharmacy does not dispense controlled substances to Washington State residents you can complete and send the Certification of No Dispensing of Controlled Substances form to the department.  If the department approves your request your pharmacy will not have to file zero reports for compliance purposes.  You will need to resend the form each year you renew your pharmacy license.

Information for Patients/Customers:

You can direct patients or customers to our Public FAQ page for more information on the program.  The department has also developed a public fact sheet you can print to provide information to your patients or customers.

Technical Assistance:

Health Information Designs, Inc. (HID) hosts the WA PMP. It is a nationally-recognized leader in the PMP and healthcare automation solutions and services industry. If you need any technical assistance as you prepare to begin data submission, please call HID’s WA PMP Helpdesk at (877) 719-3121, or send an e-mail to wapmp-info@hidinc.com.
