Rules

The Washington Legislature passed a law (RCW 70.225) authorizing the Prescription Monitoring Program in 2007. The law gave ownership of the program to the department.

The department has restarted the development of a rule to create and operate a prescription monitoring program. It developed the draft rule by having stakeholder workshops, considering written comments and having discussions with interested parties.

The department held a public hearing for the rules on June 27, 2011. The department reviewed comments received during the public comment period, made any necessary changes, and filed the rules for adoption on July 27, 2011. The rules (WAC 246-470) became effective on August 27, 2011.

The rules can be viewed online at: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=246-470

Substitute Senate Bill 6105

Substitute Senate Bill 6105 (2012) was signed into law on March 29, 2012. The bill requires the department in collaboration with the Veterinary Board of Governors to establish alternative data reporting requirements for veterinarians reporting to the Prescription Monitoring Program.

Veterinarians are required to report to the Prescription Monitoring Program until June 7, 2012. We encourage continued reporting until the permanent rule is adopted.
