Current Rules in Progress

Continuing Competency |
The commission has been working on developing a continuing competency model for the last several years. The commission is required by statute to develop continuing competency mechanisms. Attached is the draft rule language for your review. Having a continuing competency program for nurses promotes patient safety, public protection and enhances nursing practice. The rules hearing was held September 10, 2010. The rules go into effect January 1, 2011. The rules require completion of 531 hours of active practice and 45 hours of continuing education every three years for RNs and LPNs. The three years begins with your renewal month in 2011 and ends with your renewal month in 2014. You will have a full three years to obtain the hours.
