Licensing Requirements
Licensed nursing home administrators must renew their license every year on or before their birth date. The Board of Nursing Home Administrator requires 36 hours of continuing education, reported every two years. (WAC 246-843-150(1)). There are two ways to get licensed:
- By fulfilling the administrator-in-training requirement.
Applicants shall have a bachelor’s degree and complete a Board of Nursing Home Administrators-approved administrator-in- training program (AIT) in a nursing home (WAC 246-843-090).
The program shall be under the guidance and supervision of a qualified preceptor (WAC 246-843-095). AIT and preceptor shall be at the same facility. AIT programs are either 1,500, 1,000 or 500 hours, depending upon previous experience working in a nursing home or other long-term care settings. AITs must pass a national exam after finishing the AIT program.
Candidates who successfully complete the national examination must complete an approved course on laws relating to nursing homes in Washington within 180 days of initial licensure (WAC 246-843-130) (4)).
- By endorsement if licensed in another state.
Applicant shall have a bachelor’s degree, shall have passed the national exam and shall be currently licensed in another state that requires equivalent qualifications to those required by
RCW 18.52.071.
