National Standardized Examination for Pharmacy Technician Certification
Rules effective January 1, 2009
The Board of Pharmacy adopted rules to require PT applicants to pass a board-approved national standardized exam. Individuals issued a pharmacy technician credential before 2009 will not need to meet the new standards. All PT applicants will still need to complete a pharmacy technician training program approved by the board.
Pharmacy Technician exam(s) accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) meets the new exam prerequisite for credentialing in Washington State.
Visit the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA) website at: www.noca.org to verify if an exam is board approved. Approved programs will be listed under the NCCA Accreditation tab.

Rule Making Activities
Board of Pharmacy Schedules
Carisoprodol
The board adopted changes to existing rules to add
the drug carisoprodol to schedule IV controlled
substances amending
WAC 246-887-070. The board determined based on
thoughtful consideration of evidence and testimony
provided at the public rules hearing that the potential
for abuse and risk to public safety warranted the
scheduling of carisoprodol. The rule goes into effective
31 days after it is filed with the Washington State Code
Reviser’s OfficePharmaceutical Services - Correctional Pharmacies --
Draft rule language: Chapter 246-874 WAC.
246-874 WAC The Board of Pharmacy has filed a Preproposal Statement of
Inquiry to provide public notice of its intent to consider
rule making to develop rules that will establish enforceable
standards specific to the practice of pharmacy in correctional
pharmacies.
Animal Control Agencies and Humane Societies
Amending sections of chapter
246-886 WAC and WAC
246-887-050 thru 070. The Board of Pharmacy filed
WSR 09-11-049 on
May 13, 2009. The Board will consider rule making to
incorporate the administration and recordkeeping
standards in its model policies for animal control
agencies and human societies in rule as it relates to
the use of legend drugs and sodium pentobarbital used
for euthanasia. Please let the Board know if you are interested in
