Registration Requirements

Complete the Application Package for Registration as a Recreational Therapist

Evidence of completion of four clock hours of AIDS/HIV education. If you feel you have not met this requirement, or you cannot document that you have, you can meet this requirement through a correspondence course or a community college.

Pay application fee

Verify and provide location of credentials held in other states.

Once these materials are received, your file will be reviewed, and your eligibility will be determined. Please keep in mind that you must register before practicing as a recreational therapist.

Definitions

Department:  The Department of Health

Recreation Therapy:  The use of recreational, and/or community activities to include leisure counseling and community integration as treatment intervention to improve functional leisure and community competence of persons with a physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, or social disability. The primary purpose of recreation therapy is the use of leisure and community integration activities to restore, remediate, or rehabilitate persons in order to improve functioning and independence, as well as reduce or eliminate the effects of illness or disability.

Recreational therapist:  A person registered under this chapter.

Registration:  The registration issued to a person under this chapter.

Secretary:  The Secretary of Health or the Secretary's designee.
