The veterinary law was amended. (See 1271-S.SL) allows a veterinarian to delegate to a licensed veterinary technician, under their indirect supervision, certain nondiscretionary functions to prepare legend drugs, nonlegend drugs and controlled substances.
What are the non-discretionary functions that may be delegated?

Can a registered veterinary medication clerk prepare controlled substances?
No. Delegation is limited to legend and nonlegend drugs. The law specifically prohibits controlled substances.
Can a registered veterinary medication clerk or licensed veterinary technician deliver a prescription?
Yes, but only after the veterinarian has inspected and approved the formulation, packaging and labeling of the final prescription. The prescription may be delivered under the indirect supervision of the veterinarian.
What does delivery of the prescription mean?
Deliver or delivery is the actual, constructive, or attempted transfer from one person to another of a legend drug.
What does indirect supervision mean?
Indirect supervision is when the veterinarian is not on the premises but has given written or oral instructions for the delegated task.
Can licensed veterinary technicians administer drugs?
Yes, they may administer legend drugs and controlled substances under indirect supervision of a veterinarian. The Veterinary Board of Governors is developing rules to define the circumstances and extent to which a licensed veterinary technician may administer legend drugs and controlled substances.
What does administer mean?
Administer is the direct application of a legend drug or the application of a controlled substance whether by injection, inhalation, ingestions, or any other means, to the body of a patient.
