Continuing Competency Program

The Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission adopted rules for an independent continuing competency program effective January 2011. Registered nurses and licensed practical nurses will be required to keep documentation showing at least 531 hours of active practice and 45 clock hours of continuing education. The hours must start on their renewal date this year. As a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse, you will have until your renewal date in 2014 to meet these requirements (three years).

We will begin random audits in 2014. You will not need to send in documentation unless we select you for an audit. License renewals will continue to be annual; however, nurses must attest every three years to reflect they have met the requirements for both practice and continuing education.

If your renewal date is: Continuing competency attestation due on your renewal of:
January 2011 January 2014
February 2011 February 2014
March 2011 March 2014
April 2011 April 2014
May 2011 May 2014
June 2011 June 2014
July 2011 July 2014
August 2011 August 2014
September 2011 September 2014
October 2011 October 2014
November 2011 November 2014
December 2011 December 2014

Notice: You will see the attestation on your renewal notice when your renewal cycle ends. It is your responsibility to inform the Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission of any change in address, email, and telephone number, whether renewing or not.
