These Pediatric Consultation and Transfer Guidelines are distributed by the Washington State Department of Health on behalf of the Governor’s Steering Committee on EMS and Trauma to assist Washington hospitals and trauma care services with the development of their pediatric interfacility transfer guidelines.  The guidelines address critical illness, burn and trauma patients.

The Department of Health (DOH) does not mandate the use of these guidelines.  The DOH recognizes the varying resources of different services and that what works for one may not work for another.  Hospitals and physicians should evaluate the content of these guidelines to determine the potential benefits for their own practice or for any particular patient.  The decision to use these guidelines depends on the independent medical judgment of the physician.  It is recommended that facilities and physicians who choose to use these guidelines consult with the DOH on a regular basis for any updates to their content.

These guidelines were adapted from the professional literature and standards.  They have been endorsed by the Steering Committee and by the DOH Office of Community Health Systems. The guidelines have not been tested or validated.

The DOH would appreciate any feedback about experiences with the guidelines. Please send comments to Mary Rotert RN, 360 236-2874 or mary.rotert@doh.wa.gov.
