To Apply for Reciprocal (out-of-state) EMS Certification
 

Applying for Washington State EMS provider certification based on current EMS provider certification from another state or with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.

This process applies to the following EMS certification Levels.   

  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
  • Advanced EMT (AEMT)
  • Paramedic

Application forms provided can no longer be filled out on the computer and printed.  Please print out the form, complete the application and obtain the required signatures.

Employment or supervision of a Department licensed EMS agency or an approved EMS supervising organization is a certification requirement.  A list of licensed agencies is provided below:

Infectious Disease Prevention training is required for all individuals seeking certification in Washington State even if you have received this training elseware.  The Office of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma System accepts either of the following training options to meet the bloodborne pathogens training requirement.

  • The "Infectious Disease Prevention For EMS Providers" training program which is usually taught in initial First Responder and EMT-B courses, but may be available at the local EMS level

OR

  • A Washington State Department of Health approved, 7 hour HIV/AIDS Prevention Training program.  A Resource listing for the 7 hour program are listed below.

Step 1:  Meet the reciprocal certification requirements in the application packet.

Step 2:  Complete all the requirements provided in the application which includes Washington State approved, seven hour HIV/AIDS education course (see above).

Step 3:  Complete the Out-of-State Certification Application and the Confirmation Form
This form  MUST be printed out to complete and to obtain the necessary signatures.

Step 4:  Provide the information to the address provided above.

 

Skill maintenance recertification requirements once the reciprocal certification applicants obtains Washington State certification status:

WAC 246-976-163 (3):

     (3) Skill maintenance requirements for applicants requesting reciprocal certification:

(a) Reciprocity applicants credentialed less than three years must meet Washington State skill maintenance requirements for the initial certification period identified above.

(b) Reciprocity applicants credentialed three years or more must meet Washington State skill maintenance requirements for second and subsequent certification periods.

(c) The county MPD may evaluate an EMS provider's skills to determine proficiency in the application of those skills prior to recommending certification.  The MPD may recommend that an EMS provider obtain specific training to become proficient in any skills deemed insufficient by the MPD or delegate.
