For information on the interpretation process for Hospice Care Centers see WAC 246-335-125. Hospice Care Center Licensing Regulation interpretations have been requested for the following:

Q. May a hospice care center contract with a licensed nursing home for food services?

A. Yes a hospice care center may contract with a licensed nursing home for food service provided the kitchen and dry storage areas are sized to handle the addition meals, and will supply meals at intervals to meet the needs of the hospice care center patients without interfering with the meals required for those residing in the licensed nursing home.

The kitchen of a licensed nursing home may meet all the requirements for providing meals to a hospice care center because:

  1. They both are required to comply with the same food service requirements found in WAC 246-215;
  2. A nursing home kitchen is considered a licensed food service facility;
  3. A nursing home is a commercial enterprise; and
  4. As a licensed food service facility, a nursing home kitchen may be considered a licensed food company since a company is defined as a commercial enterprise.

WAC 246-335-280(1)

Q. May a hospice care center contract with an adjoining nursing home for use of its waste handling area?

A. Yes, a hospice care center may contract with an adjoining nursing home for use of its waste handling area, provided a hand wash sink is provided adjacent to the path of travel into the hospice care center before accessing a patient care area.

A waste handling are in an adjoining nursing home, depending on the type of waste, must be located in a soiled utility room per WAC 388-97-32550(2)(d), OR in a well-ventilated room or an outside are per WAC 388-97-355(7).

Neither the hospice care center regulations, nor the nursing home regulations place a minimum size on such storage spacing for waste handling.

A waste handling are in an adjoining nursing home does meet the hospice care center requirement because it is in a separate, well-ventilated room or outside space.

Q. May a hospice care center utilize the receiving and unloading area of an adjoining nursing home?

A. Yes, a hospice care center may utilize the receiving and unloading area of an adjoining nursing home, provided the hospice care center has its own storage area, and provided the nursing home receiving and unloading are meets the hospice care center requirements.
