Project H. O. P. E.
Health Occupations Preparatory Experiences

This student internship is funded through the Higher Education Coordinating Board, sponsored by the Washington State Department of Heath and is facilitated by the Area Health Education Centers in Eastern and Western Washington.

Currently, there is a shortage of health care professionals in many parts of the health care industry. The DOH is working to create greater interest among a diverse group of high school students to potentially choose a health care profession as a long term career. This experience will serve to expose students to the many, many health occupations that make up the health care industry.

The Area Health Education Centers, in collaboration with other agencies and schools, work to provide practical experience to currently-enrolled health care students and to recruit local students to health care professions. There are two such centers in Washington » the Western Washington AHEC in Seattle, and the AHEC at Washington State University Spokane.

Working with health care facilities across the state, with schools of health science, community college programs, and local high school and elementary schools, people interested in looking at health career options can get first-hand shadowing, mentoring, and clinical rotation experiences through the AHEC connections.

If you are interested in learning more about Project HOPE or are interested in serving as an internship site, please contact Jennell Prentice, (360) 236-2814.

Project H.O.P.E. is temporarily suspended due to State budget cuts.

Please check back again for future updates.
