Health System Resources Grant Program, Washington State Department
of Health (state) State Grant Program targeted to rural and urban underserved
populations. Funding is appropriated each biennium; awards are made
via a competitive application process. For more information see:

Washington Health Foundation Grant (private)
Grant program consistent
with the Washington Health Foundation mission, to make Washington
and its communities the healthiest in the nation. Grant funds
are focused on building Healthy Systems and promoting Healthy Living. Awards are made via

HRSA
Rural Health Care Services Outreach and
Rural Health Network Development Program - 3 years (federal)
This program encourages creative health care delivery
systems in rural communities that lack essential care services. The
emphasis of the grant program is on service delivery through
collaboration. The grantee must form a consortium with at least two
additional partners. The next time this grant will be open is
in the summer of 2010.
HRSA Network Development Planning Grant Program - 1 year
(federal)
This grant is administered by the Office of Rural Health Policy
(ORHP). Its focus is general
community health planning. Applicants could look at a wide
range of possible projects such as:
- Strategic health
planning at the community level
- Assessing the economic impact of health care in a rural community
- Promoting collaboration between providers such as Critical Access
Hospitals and Federally Qualified Health Centers
- Conducting a community needs assessment
- Conducting local health workforce planning
- Hire a consultant to conduct Health Information Technology readiness
The deadline for applications has now passed, but the grant should
be open again next summer. When that happens we will post an
announcement on this page.
HRSA Financial Aid for Health Professions Students &
Practitioners (federal)
Health
professions financial aid
USDA Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Program (federal)
Primarily user equipment that functions via telecommunications
systems for the purposes of connecting students and teachers or
medical professionals and patients at separate sites. Examples are
video-conferencing or teleradiology equipment. The Grant Program
funds equipment that operates over telecommunications systems, but
does not fund the telecommunications links themselves. In additions,
it funds such things as the acquisition of instructional programming
and technical assistance and instruction for using eligible
equipment. The 2008 cycle has ended. The 2009 cycle should be

USDA Distance Learning & Telemedicine
State Rural Hospital Flexibility Program (federal dollars passed
through the state) Washington State is participating in this program
to promote the objectives of the Critical Access Hospital Program: support
quality and performance improvement, development of rural hospital networks,
integration with rural emergency medical systems, and promoting telehealth

The National Rural Funders Collaborative
Is a partnership of
national and regional funders, grass roots practitioners, policymakers,
and the private sector to leverage $100 million over the next 10 years
for the purpose of expanding resources for communities and families
in rural areas facing persistent poverty. In addition to its work to
leverage new and sustainable resources for rural areas, NRFC is working
to develop a learning network in which rural stakeholders can improve
the viability and livability of rural areas through identification of
best practices in the areas of impact, leverage and policy change. For

Grants state-of-the-art, wireless
laptop computers and technology equipment to schools and community groups
serving low-income populations and individuals, as well as community

Rural Health Clinics (RHC)
Must be located in communities that
are both » rural» and » underserved» . They may be proprietary or not-for-profit.
They must meet certain federal requirements and be certified by Medicare.
They receive enhanced reimbursement for Medicare and Medicaid patients,
but no grants or subsidies. For more information see:

Washington State Health Care Authority Community Health Services
Provides grants to
support primary health care services or dental services. Clinics must
meet certain criteria. For more information see:

Medicare 10 Percent Rural Bonus
Under this program Centers for
Medicare and Medicaid Services gives a 10 percent bonus payment for
Medicare-reimbursable physician professional services (excludes technical
or diagnostic services) provided within the geographic health professional
shortage area. The Office of Community and Rural Health 360-236-2800
has maps of geographic health professional shortage areas or can tell
you the process for determining whether your area might qualify as a

Provides up to 30 visa
waivers per year to allow foreign trained physicians to work in underserved

Help to arrange for and financially
support temporary coverage for health care providers (MD/DO, ARNP, PA
and Pharmacist) in rural areas when they are unavailable due to illness,

Volunteer Retired Providers
