Frequently Asked Questions about the

Health Professional Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP)

Once a practice site has been approved for the priority list, is loan repayment to a provider guaranteed?

No.  Making the priority site list does not guarantee that position will receive loan repayment.   The provider must successfully complete a Provider Application.  Loan repayment awards are competitive.  The HPLRP gives awards based on a scoring system..  Also, the number of awards are limited by the amount of funds available.  We do not fund all positions on the priority site list, even if the provider submits an application.

What types of positions are eligible?

The loan repayment program targets health professionals providing primary medical and dental care in primary care facilities.

We do not offer loan repayment to providers whose practice focus is specialty or emergency care.  If you are not clear whether the position for which you are seeking loan repayment is eligible, contact John Hanson at (360) 236-2819 for more information.

Specific types of positions that are eligible:
The HPLRP targets health professionals providing primary medical and dental care in primary care facilities. The provider types for which we are accepting site applications are:

  • General Family MD and DO

  • General Internist

  • OB/GYN

  • General Pediatrician

  • Physician Assistant

  • Nurse Practitioner

  • Certified Nurse Midwife

  • General Dentist

  • Dental Hygienist

What are the most common mistakes in filling out the online Site Application?

Incomplete applications.  Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.  You must submit the online Application by the deadline date. NOTE: An application is not submitted until you hit the "Submit" button.  If you start and application make sure you log back in and confirm you have submitted it.

Two common areas of missing information:

  1. Incomplete Medicaid and Sliding-Fee Discount Schedule patient profiles.
  2. Incomplete provider descriptions.  We need to know provider type.

Are part-time providers eligible?

No.  Providers must work full time, which is considered to be at least 40 hours per week.

Can a provider work at more than one site?

Yes. However, sites must identify the separate locations during the site application process and fill out a separate application for each site.  We calculate service obligations based on the percentage of time the provider spends at the approved site.

Are new practices eligible?

Site must have been in business for a minimum of one year.

When will HPLRP release the priority site list?

We will notify you by letter in October.

Should I offer Loan Repayment to a provider once my site has been approved for the priority list?

NO!  Making the priority site list does not guarantee that position will receive loan repayment.  The provider must successfully complete a Provider Application.  We make loan repayment awards on a funds-available basis and a scoring system.  We do not fund all positions making the priority site list, even if the provider submits an application.

My position has made the priority site list, how do I get a provider application?

The online provider application will be available in January each year at www.hecb.wa.gov/health.

When does HPLFP make the awards?

We will mail notifications in June.
