Purpose:

The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines for supervisors and managers to insure a Department-wide policy that encourages breastfeeding by new mothers who continue to work.

Philosophy:

As a public health agency, the Health Department has an interest in promotion of infant breastfeeding, since substantial evidence supports the value of this practice for the health of the infant and young child.  In addition, the Department believes there are significant potential benefits to be derived by the agency, such as lower absenteeism due to a sick child, higher morale among employees, reduced staff turnover, lower health insurance costs and enhanced loyalty among employees.

Policy/Procedures:

The Department will allow flextime for nursing mothers to provide for expression of milk or, when practical, worksite nursing of infants.

The Department will provide a suitable private space where milk expression or nursing can occur.

The Department will provide reasonable access to a potable water source, an electrical outlet and a sink with soap and clean paper towels for washing of hands and rinsing of breast pump equipment.

The Department will provide reasonable access to suitable hygienic cold storage, such as a refrigerator, for the mother to store her milk.
