Every Day in Washington State . . .

  • The Department of Health works with local health departments, licensed hospitals, and many other partners to prepare our communities for public health emergencies.

  • About 210 babies born get a healthy start through early detection of treatable diseases by the Newborn Screening Program.

  • More than 5 million people have safe and reliable drinking water due to the efforts of our Drinking Water Program and local health departments.

  • More than 160,000 women and young children receive healthy food and nutrition education from the Women, Infant, and children Program (WIC) in local communities.

  • About 35 people call the Washington State Tobacco Quit Line and take the first step toward kicking the habit.

  • More than 2.5 million people eat in restaurants with confidence because of the efforts of local health departments and our Food Safety Program.

  • Department of Health boards and commissions license and regulate thousands of doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals.

  • About 95 percent of kids entering school are protected against preventable diseases because of public health immunization efforts.

  • More than 400 samples are tested by the state Public Health Laboratories for a variety of diseases, such as West Nile virus and flu.

  • About 1,500 people receive first class emergency medical services in their homes, businesses and public places.
