What's Next in Pandemic Flu Planning

Local

Planning: At the local level, public health agencies will expand their outreach to local partners, gathering input as a basis for refining their preparedness plans. They will conduct jurisdiction-wide community pandemic flu forums with participants that include local businesses, tribes, hospitals, pharmacies, community health centers, local elected officials and members of the public. At the forums, participants will be given tools that will help them identify what may be expected of them during an emergency so they can better prepare their organizations, their employees, and their families. All organizations will work to prepare contingency plans that will identify specific roles and responsibilities for all staff.

Exercises: Local health jurisdictions will also conduct drills and exercises to test their plans. Lessons learned from these exercises will be used to update and improve their plans.

Communications: Finally, local health agencies will conduct risk communication and public outreach activities such as distributing materials, holding community informational meetings, and outreach to special populations to better prepare all within their jurisdictions.

State

Planning: At the state level we will be doing many of the same activities. We'll be developing agency, division, and program specific contingency plans that identify our critical tasks and how we plan to staff them. We will complete a state level plan that identifies response roles for about fifteen state agencies that have been tasked with supporting the department of Health in a response to an influenza pandemic.

Exercises: We will facilitate numerous drills and exercises both at the state agency level with the governor and with other response partners. All of our plans must be tested and retested.

Communications: DOH will conduct a statewide public awareness campaign that will include:
  • Distributing over one million copies of the brochure Preparing for Pandemic Influenza: A Personal and Family Guide to schools, government agencies, local health departments and as inserts in newspaper.

  • Collecting data from focus groups,

  • Production of broadcast and print media spots intended to encourage the public to prepare for emergencies and take basic precautions to prevent the spread of germs.
