Individuals come to work in public health with diverse backgrounds in education, training and experience. They work in a complex system in positions requiring a complex set of knowledge, skills and abilities.

This orientation process was developed to help prepare individuals new to various roles in public health for the challenging work that lies ahead. It provides an integrated approach to orientation, including:

• Structured opportunities to get information, support and technical assistance needed through peers, mentors, and key contacts; and

• A web-based resource that includes competencies important to your role; a self-assessment tool to help you develop a plan for your orientation and identify priorities for knowledge and skill development; and a Learning Resource Toolkit that contains resources and activities that can help you learn about your role, public health practice, and the public health system in Washington State.
