Susan Kelly: Keeping public health simple — it’s about the people
After more than four decades in health care, Susan Kelly has learned that the most important aspect of public health is also the most basic – protect the health of all residents. Despite all of her years in health care — the last 14 of which has been spent as a hospital inspector for facilities and services — Susan has lost none of the passion that pushed her in the first place. “Our job is to be an advocate for consumers as well as for the people who provide services,” Susan said. “It’s a tough job to provide health care these days.” Much of her job is spent educating hospitals and health care providers in how to comply with state and agency rules and regulations. “I like that we use a non-adversarial approach in working with providers,” Susan said. “They appreciate that, too. It’s true that you can catch a lot more flies with honey.” As she approaches retirement, Susan says she has no regrets passing up the money she was making in the private sector for the satisfaction that she gets from her work today. “There’s really a small group of people who make the
decisions affecting hospitals and service providers. I am happy to have been a part of
that,” she said. “It’s really about making a difference and contributing back to
society. There’s a lot of satisfaction in that.” |
