    Francisco Arias-Reyes :

Francisco Arias-Reyes

When Francisco Arias-Reyes was training to become a physician in his native El Salvador, he had no idea that his work in communities outside the hospital would be the most important preparation for the work he does today with the Department of Health’s Diabetes Prevention and Control Program.

The program works to assure health care providers and patients have the best tools to treat diabetes, and to prevent type 2 diabetes. The Diabetes Prevention and Control Program provides surveillance of diabetes rates and trends, and brings together partners to achieve state and national goals around diabetes prevention and management.

As a Health Services Consultant with the program, one of Francisco’s main jobs is coordinating the Washington State Collaborative. The Collaborative pulls together a broad cross-section of health providers from around the state to work on developing the best ways to care for patients with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In each community, the Collaborative tries to balance local needs and resources while developing its approach to providing care.

The program also coordinates the Washington State Diabetes Network which is made up of government, health care, community groups, insurers, service organizations and businesses. Together they implement the Washington State Diabetes Plan that guides the prevention and treatment of diabetes in Washington.

Diabetes now affects more than 1.4 million Washington residents:

  • Over 300,000 people in Washington have diagnosed diabetes.
  • Over 127,000 people have undiagnosed diabetes.
  •  Over 987,000 people have pre-diabetes.
