Josephine Pompey
Josephine Pompey likes to make things better, whether it’s improving an analytical process at a laboratory or helping her community through volunteer work. Josephine is one of the senior chemists at our state’s Radiation Laboratory, one of several laboratories located at the Department of Health’s Public Health Laboratories in Shoreline. Her job is to analyze samples of all kinds for the presence of radioactive materials. Josephine oversees the analysis of water, sediment, shellfish and seaweed samples collected from the Hood Canal and Puget Sound. She also takes the lead in analyzing samples collected during inspections of medical facilities and other businesses, as well as samples that result from citizen reports. Josephine participates in the analysis of samples from other programs such as environmental monitoring in the area around the Hanford nuclear reservation. Outside of the lab Josephine volunteers for organizations that include the Junior League, Greater Puget Sound March of Dimes and the United Way. Josephine has also worked with the Seattle International Children’s Festival for the last 20 years. This year she has found a way to combine her public health work with her other interests by leading an effort to demonstrate the importance of hand washing to children at the festival (May 14-18). Using ultraviolet light, children will be able to see the amount of germs on their hands before and after hand washing, and they will be able to examine bacteria from their hands under a microscope. |
