E. coli detected in Spokane County Water District #3; customers in area of north Spokane advised to boil drinking water
OLYMPIA ¾ The presence of E. coli in some of the water supplied by Spokane County Water District #3 leads the district to advise its customers in an area of north Spokane to boil their drinking water. The boil water advisory, which will be in effect until further notice, is for the area north of Francis Avenue, south of Country Home Boulevard, east of Cedar Road and west of Division. Residents in this area are being notified directly by water district staff.
“We’re working directly with Water District #3 to find the source of the contamination and fix the problem,” said state Department of Health Director of Drinking Water Denise Clifford. “The district has been very responsive as we work to restore safe and reliable drinking water for customers in this area.”
Emergency chlorine treatment has been applied to the two reservoirs and lines serving the affected area. No illnesses related to the community’s drinking water have been reported. Anyone who feels ill should contact their regular health care provider.
“We’re doing all we can to eliminate the bacteria from the water system. Responding to this kind of emergency and working to protect the health of our customers is our highest priority,” said Connie Beitey spokeswoman for the Spokane County Water District #3.
The boil water advisory may cover as many as 4,000 area residents. Health officials recommend several precautionary steps that customers should take. These include, boiling water at a rolling boil for three to five minutes or using purchased, treated bottled water for any water that might be consumed. For example, boiled water or properly treated bottled water should be used for brushing teeth, dishwashing, preparing food and making ice, as well as for drinking.
The advisory will remain in effect until the Water District and the
Department of Health are confident there is no longer a threat of illness to
their customers. Once satisfactory test results are reported, customers will be
notified that the advisory has been lifted. Questions for Water District #3
should be directed to Ty Wick or Connie Beitey, 509-536-0121.
