Council receives updates on health conditions and factors affecting health
The Governor?s Interagency Council on Health Disparities this week will receive briefings on a number of health conditions and social determinants of health. The council will begin prioritizing topics to be addressed in an action plan to eliminate health disparities.
The term "health disparities" describes the higher burden of disease, disability and death among certain groups when compared to the general population. Serious disparities among racial and ethnic groups in Washington have been well documented. Health conditions include illnesses, injuries or other health outcomes. Social determinants of health are specific conditions in society that are known to affect health, such as poverty, education and housing.
The council will hear updates on its work plan for developing recommendations on culturally and linguistically appropriate health literature and on a survey of healthcare professionals.
The council meets Thursday, September 20, at the Comfort Inn in Tumwater. For more information go to the Health Disparities Council Web site (www.sboh.wa.gov/hdcouncil) or contact the state Board of Health office, 360-236-4104.
