Date Appointed: August 2005
Term Ends: July 2011

Karen VanDusen has both a strong personal interest in and professional experience in public health and health promotion. In 2008, she retired from her position as Director of Environmental Health and Safety at the University of Washington, culminating a long career in public health that began in 1965 when she was hired by the Seattle-King County Health Department as the first woman environmental health specialist in Washington State. Her professional career followed many paths and included working as a public school teacher, working at both local and state health departments, being a private consultant, and holding faculty positions at the University of Washington, Western Washington State University, and at Evergreen State.

Through the years, she has held leadership positions in national and state professional associations, volunteered with a variety of community and church activities, and also served seven years as one of the first community members appointed to serve on the King County Board of Health.

She currently lives with her husband of 41 years on Whidbey Island and considers their two grown daughters the best of life’s gifts. She appreciates the chance to work with the other members of the Board in promoting and protecting the public’s health and considers her time with the Board an opportunity to serve and give back to the larger community.
