Karen VanDusen

Karen VanDusen has both a strong personal interest in and professional
experience in public health and health promotion. In 2008, she retired
from her position as Director of Environmental Health and Safety at the
University of Washington, culminating a long career in public health
that began in 1965 when she was hired by the Seattle-King County Health
Department as the first woman environmental health specialist in
Washington State. Her professional career followed many paths and
included working as a public school teacher, working at both local and
state health departments, being a private consultant, and holding
faculty positions at the University of Washington, Western Washington
State University, and at Evergreen State.
Through the years, she has held leadership positions in national and state
professional associations, volunteered with a variety of community and
church activities, and also served seven years as one of the first
community members appointed to serve on the King County Board of Health.
She currently lives with her husband of 41 years on Whidbey Island and
considers their two grown daughters the best of lifes gifts. She
appreciates the chance to work with the other members of the Board in
promoting and protecting the publics health and considers her time with
the Board an opportunity to serve and give back to the larger community.
