Washington Electronic Disease Surveillance System

WEDSS, the Washington Electronic Disease Surveillance System, is a series of programs that automate and standardize the reporting of communicable diseases in Washington State. These projects will make the reporting and investigation of disease faster, simpler and more reliable. It will also assure the consistent and secure exchange of information during a public health emergency.

WEDSS projects improve the public health system in Washington by automating public health information and providing a secure 24/7 pipeline for urgent communications during public health emergencies.

The projects that are part of WEDSS are:

  • PHIMS (Public Health Issue Management System):
Allows local health to report communicable disease via the internet in a standardized format making it easier to share that information with DOH and the CDC

  • PHRED (Public Health Reporting of Electronic Data):
Automates reporting lab results and other information between Washington laboratories, DOH and local health departments.

  • SECURES (Secure Electronic Communication, Urgent Response and Exchange System):
Allows Washington public health and emergency response partners to communicate and collaborate via the Web.

  • Local Health Jurisdiction (LHJ) Infrastructure:
Connecting Local Health Jurisdictions with the resources they need to be able to communicate and respond during public health crises.

Meeting minutes, fact sheets, project status reports and other reports and papers can be found in the WEDSS Library.
