HIV Planning

About Us

The Office of Infectious Disease (OID) has a new integrated planning group, the Washington Syndemic Planning Group (WSPG). This group has replaced the Washington's HIV Planning Steering Group, the state's Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Part B advisory group, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) HIV planning body after they dissolved in December 2021.

WSPG serves as the state’s CDC Division of HIV Prevention and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB) Integrated Prevention and Care planning body. Established in July 2022, WSPG mission is to advise OID on statewide strategies, funding priorities, communications, research, and evaluation activities to address the syndemic of HIV, viral hepatitis, and sexual transmitted infections.

Historical Information

On December 1, 2014, Governor Jay Inslee issued a proclamation (PDF) supporting the development of a statewide plan to reduce the rate of new HIV diagnoses by 50 percent by 2020. Shortly after, the Department of Health Office of Infectious Disease (OID) integrated HIV care and prevention planning to create a new HIV planning system (PDF). The system replaced the Community Programs Planning Group, the Early Intervention Program Steering Committee, and HIV Prevention Planning Group.

The 2017—2021 plan and associated need assessment was created through a collaborative process. The input came from:

  • People living with HIV.
  • Community based organization.
  • Local health jurisdictions.
  • Clinicians.
  • Case managers.
  • Allied professionals committed to reducing new HIV infections and optimizing health outcome for people living with HIV.
