Quitting Tobacco

Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable death and chronic disease in Washington state. Fifty-nine percent of adult smokers in our state report they have tried to stop smoking, but many do not use methods that have been proven to increase their odds of success. For example, it’s important to set up a quit plan that includes both medications and counseling.

The good news is that most insurance plans offer counseling and medications to help you quit. Many insurance plans will cover free counseling with your primary care provider, calls to a telephone quitline, or a telephone wellness plan. You may also qualify for 90 days of free medication or nicotine gum, lozenges, patches, sprays or inhalers to help you quit. Please check with your health plan to see what they cover.

If you don't have insurance or a plan with telephone counseling

Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669). You will receive one call with a quit counselor to set up a quit plan and help you quit or stay quit. If you are over age 18 you can also request self-help materials by mail. You may be eligible for two weeks of free nicotine replacement gum or patches.

Apple Health

Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669). Callers with an Apple Health plan qualify for eight counseling calls to the quitline and up to twelve weeks of free nicotine patches or gum per year. A trained quit coach will help you pick the best medications for a successful quit. Apple Health varies slightly depending on what plan you have. Please see your health plan website for additional information.

Quit for Life® (private insurance)

Check with your human resource office or health plan benefits guide to find your Quit for Life® phone number or call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for a live transfer to your counseling program.

Medicare

Medicare Part B (medical insurance) covers eight face-to-face visits in a 12-month period by a qualified doctor or other Medicare-recognized practitioner. If you have a Medicare Advantage care plan, call or visit your health plan website. If your prescription plan does not cover nicotine replacement, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW to see if you are eligible for two weeks of free nicotine gum or patches.
