Maxillofacial Teams

The Children with Special Health Care Needs Program supports three regional Maxillofacial Teams in Washington State through contracts to coordinate care for infants and children born with oral facial anomalies, like cleft lip and cleft palate.

In each region a nurse serves as Maxillofacial Team Coordinator.  Teams include (private sector) medical specialists with expertise in maxillofacial conditions including plastic surgeons, orthodontists, oral surgeons, dentists, speech pathologists, otolaryngologists, social workers, nurses, and others.

The Maxillofacial Team Coordinator works closely with the team members, families and local public health nurses to schedule children for team review, facilitate visits with each specialist as necessary prior to the team review, collect reports of visits to specialists, collect data such as x-rays, photos, or dental slides, and summarize current information and recommendations prior to the team review.

Following the team review, the Team Coordinator assures a written summary of the reports and recommendations is sent to the family and each specialist involved in the children’s treatment plan.  Children and their families are present for the team review, allowing both families and specialists the opportunity to interact for the best interests of the children.

The Team Coordinator also works with local hospital staff to be sure each family of a newborn with a cleft or other oral condition gets timely, accurate information about the condition and the resources available for care.

A statewide multidisciplinary workgroup developed “Critical Elements of Care for Cleft Lip and Palate”.  This guideline emphasizes the critical importance of team care.  It includes a “Summary of Key Interventions by Age” for pediatricians and others who may see only a few children with clefts in their practice.  The Critical Elements of Care Booklet on Cleft Lip and Palate is available online.  It is a PDF document and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader software.  See the webpage for more information.

The Children with Special Health Care Needs Program supports Maxillofacial Teams in Spokane, Tacoma, and Yakima.  Teams also operate in Seattle and Portland, Oregon.  Children are usually seen by the team serving their area of residence, however parents may choose to continue to be seen by the team initially providing services if they move to another region in the state.
