School Immunization Data

The Department of Health collects school immunization data in Washington State to improve vaccination rates and promote the importance of immunization.

Why is school immunization data important?

High immunization rates protect our communities from disease. Schools are required to report their students’ immunization status every year to the Department of Health under RCW 28A.210.110. The Department of Health uses this information to track childhood immunization rates year over year and inform health care partners’ work in improving vaccination rates in the state. High immunization rates protect our communities from disease and are part of our priorities for Health and Wellness in the DOH Transformational Plan.

School Immunization Data

What’s Here

These dashboards contain school immunization data in the state for school years 2016-2017 through 2022-2023. For older school immunization data, please visit our school immunization reports page. Data are available by county, school district and school building.

Schools in Washington state are required to report their students' immunization status by November 1st of each school year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the reporting deadline was extended to May 5th, 2021 in the 2020-21 school year. The reporting deadline in the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school year was moved to December 1st.

The required data schools must report changed in the 2019-20 school year. For more information and definitions of data in prior years please see the Technical Data Notes (PDF).

Starting in the 2018-2019 school year, schools and school districts with less than 10 students have been suppressed from public data for privacy reasons.

We recommend reading important definitions below before viewing the dashboards. We also recommend reading the technical notes document above for background information about the data.

Definitions

Immunization Reporting by "Status"

Each student has one overall immunization status:

  • Complete: The student has documented immunity to all of the vaccine-preventable diseases for which full immunity is required. Documented immunity includes vaccination at the appropriate ages and intervals or health care provider documentation of immunity by titer or disease history.
  • Out of Compliance: The student does do not have documentation of immunity for any one or more of the vaccine-preventable diseases for which documentation of immunization is required, and they are not in a temporary conditional period, and they do not have a completed Certificate of Exemption exempting them from the requirement for immunization against the disease/s missing documentation of immunity.
  • Exempt: The student has a completed Certificate of Exemption for any one or more of the immunization requirements and are not out of compliance for any other of the immunization requirements.
  • Conditional: The student is making satisfactory progress toward full immunization by continuing a vaccination schedule and is within the recommended interval for the next dose.  They cannot be out of compliance or have a documented exemption for any other immunization requirements.

Prior to 2019-2020, overall status was only collected for kindergarten and sixth grade cohorts. For K-12, only Complete and Exempt were collected. Starting in 2019-2020, overall status was collected for all cohorts.

Immunization Reporting by "Exemption"

Students may be exempted from the requirement to provide documentation of immunity to one or more of the disease immunization requirements. Students that have multiple types of exemptions on file may be counted more than once.

  • Personal/Philosophical Exemption: The student has a completed Certificate of Exemption form stating one or more of the required immunizations is against the parent or guardian’s personal or philosophical beliefs.
  • Medical Exemption: The student has a completed Certificate of Exemption form stating a health care practitioner has determined vaccination is not medically advisable for the child for one or more of the immunization requirements.
  • Religious Exemption: The student has a completed Certificate of Exemption form stating one or more of the required immunizations is against the parent or guardian’s religious beliefs.
  • Religious Membership Exemption: The student has a completed Certificate of Exemption form affirming membership in a church or religion that does not allow medical treatment by a health care practitioner.

Immunization Reporting by "Disease"

The status of each of the required immunizations is listed by disease. Each disease immunity can only have one status.

  • Complete: The disease immunity is ‘complete’ if the student has documented immunity to the disease. Documented immunity includes vaccination at the appropriate ages and intervals, or health care provider documentation of immunity by antibody titer or disease history.
  • Exempt: The disease immunity is ‘exempt’ if the student has a completed Certificate of Exemption exempting them from the requirement for full immunization against the disease, and they do not have documentation of immunity to the disease.
  • Conditional: The disease immunity is ‘conditional’ if the student is making satisfactory progress toward full immunization by continuing a vaccination schedule and is within the recommended interval for the next dose.
  • Out of Compliance: The disease immunity is ‘out of compliance’ if the student does not have documentation of immunity to the disease, and they are not in a temporary conditional period, and they do not have a completed Certificate of Exemption exempting them from the requirement for full immunization against the disease.
