Checklist to Reduce Exposure to Contaminants in Fish

checkmark  Eat a variety of fish that are low in contaminants - See Healthy Fish Guide.

checkmark  Check for local fish consumption advisories.

checkmark  Eat smaller fish, they have fewer contaminants.

checkmark  Eat the fillet and no other parts. Contaminants accumulate in the fatty areas of fish.

checkmark  Fillet, clean, and cook fish properly - See Angler Wayne's Fish Fillet Demonstration.


 

Fish Fillet Instructions: Remove skin and cut away fat along the back, sides, and belly of the fish.

Note: Mercury cannot be reduced by preparing fish this way.
